Newsletter October 2015

Autumn is at last upon us and the days are getting shorter and colder.

Reminder: Mid-term next week: School Closed

I would like to remind you that our first half term is nearly at an end and mid- term break takes place next week. There is no school next week. School re-opens on Monday November 2nd

Dress Up Friday October 23rd

Children are invited to dress up on Friday. Many children like to dress up for the Irish festival of Halloween. Many other children, who do not celebrate Halloween, may like to dress up for the festival of Diwali, celebrated by our Sikh and Hindu families in the school which takes place on November 11th. Other children might like to dress up in their national costume, in their favourite clothes, in their favourite football team kit, as a princess, or whatever they like. Dress up is entirely optional

New Board of Management

General meeting for Parents including elections to the Board of Management

Monday 23rd November 7.30pm.

All primary school Boards of Management change every 4 years, with the current cycle ending in November 2015. The Board is made up of eight people, two patron nominees  (nominated by Educate Together), two teacher nominees ( Colette Kavanagh, the school principal and one teacher elected by the teaching staff) two parent representatives, one father and one mother (elected by the parent body) and finally two community representatives nominated by the six already on the new committee. See over the page for the process for the election.

Election of Parent Reps. to the Board of Management will take place at the meeting on November 23rd

The process is as follows:

1.       Nominations will be sought for Parents to stand for election.

2.       If there is only one nominee for either mother of father representative, these people are deemed elected.

3.       If more than one nomination is received for either of the positions, a secret ballot will be held at the meeting.

4.       The election is determined on a plurality of votes (i.e. first past the post) and the votes will be counted in public.

The names of the elected parents will be notified to the parent body and the Patron’s nominees and they will become members of the new Board of Management when it convenes on the 1st December 2015 for a new four year cycle.

We encourage you think strongly about putting yourself forward or approaching someone that you think will work for the benefit of the school community to go forward for election. Even if you are not going forward yourself we want you to attend this meeting so that you have a say in what is a very important decision for you and your child’s school for the next four years.

Ms Peggy Masterson, Chairperson of the Board of Management and Colette Kavanagh principal will address the meeting about current and future plans for our school. Gemma will talk to you about her role as Home School Liaison teacher and other related matters. We hope that the PTA will give a report on their activities to the meeting.  The main purpose however is the election of the parents to the Board of Management.

We hope that the meetings will be concluded by 8.30 and this will be followed by Tea and Coffee.

Nomination papers will be available in the school from Monday 2nd November 2015.

School enrolments: School office on Wednesday mornings between 10:00 and 1:00 pm

Our enrolments for future years are filling up very fast. This year we had some very disappointed parents who couldn’t get a place in our junior infants. From now on we are operating a common enrolment list with four Educate Together schools in Lucan taking part. The system is explained in detail on our website. Please make sure to read and understand the system. Don’t forget the translate button on our website

Road Safety

I would particularly like to remind all parents of their responsibility for safe driving in and around the school, both at the main entrance and at the Castle Road entrance. Be mindful at all times that there are 430 children coming and going in this school. The Board of Management is extremely concerned about safety and we are investigating ways of ensuring that the drop up and pick up times are improved. Please be extremely careful to ensure your own child’s safety and the safety of all the children in this school. The beat way to improve things would be for more parents to use the Castle Road entrance. It is safer and quicker for the parents who use it at the moment. Be careful also of the children who are attending other schools on Castle Road. As parents we have responsibity to all children.

Mind your bikes

Please also note that children’s bikes must be locked when they are parked in the school. We cannot guarantee their safety and they are parked there at your own risk.  We do not want any situation where a bike is stolen from our grounds.

The PTA held their AGM in the hall recently and it was very well attended. The following people were elected to the committee: Chairperson is Aoife Linnane, Vice Chair is Maureen Fox, Treasurer is Marta Starczewska and Secretary is Honor Byrne.
