Newsletter October 2016

Autumn is at last upon us and the days are getting shorter and colder.

Reminder: Mid-term next week: School Closed

I would like to remind you that our first half term is nearly at an end and mid- term break takes place next week. There is no school next week. School re-opens on Monday November 7th

Junior and Senior Infants Curriculum Meetings Tuesday 25th 7:30 in the school.

On Tuesday 25th October at 7:30 in the school there will be a meeting for the parents of our Junior Infant classes and of our Senior infant classes. The class teachers will talk to the parents and outline the curriculum for each level. They will explain what is expected of the parents at home in order to fully support the education of your children. Teachers will discuss reading and reading readiness, and they will tell you about Aistear, the Early Childhood Curriculum Framework, which is being followed in all four classes. They will also discuss homework and specifically how best you can help your child at home in these early days of schooling.  Gemma, our Home School Liaison teacher and Colette, the Principal, will also address the meetings and be available to answer your questions. This is a general meeting for parents and not a forum for individual progress reports on the children. There will be individual clinic meetings next term during which the teacher will give a report to you the parent on all aspects of your child's education and social development.

Dress Up Friday October 28th

Children are invited to dress up on Friday. Many children like to dress up for the Irish festival of Halloween. Many other children, who do not celebrate Halloween, may like to dress up for the Diwali festival of lights, celebrated by our Sikh and Hindu families in the school which also takes place next weekend on October 30th.  Other children might like to dress up in their national costume, in their favourite clothes, in their favourite football team kit, as a princess, or whatever they like. Dress up is entirely optional.

School enrolments: School office on Wednesday mornings between 10:00 and 1:00 pm

Our enrolments for future years are filling up very fast. This year we had some very disappointed parents who couldn’t get a place in our junior infants. We are currently taking applications for Junior Infants, 2017. You must apply before February 2017 to be included in our first round of offers. As you know we are operating a common enrolment list with four Educate Together schools in Lucan. The system is explained in detail on our website. Please make sure to read and understand the system. Forms can be downloaded from the website. Don’t forget the translate button on our website if you need it.

Notes re absences

Don’t forget to include a note in your child’s homework journal or in a letter to your child’s teacher if your child has been absent. We need a written explanation of all absences.

Outstanding monies

Thanks you to all those parents who have sent in the €95 per child which is requested for school materials, book rental, photocopying etc.  Please send the money in to your child’s class teacher in an envelope with the child’s name on it if you have not already done so. We are also requesting that outstanding swimming money be paid immediately.

Road Safety

I would particularly like to remind all parents of their responsibility for safe driving in and around the school, both at the main entrance and at the Castle Road entrance. Be mindful at all times that there are 425 children coming and going in this school. The Board of Management is extremely concerned about safety. Please be extremely careful to ensure your own child’s safety and the safety of all the children in this school. The beat way to improve things would be for more parents to use the Castle Road entrance. It is safer and quicker for the parents who use it at the moment. Be careful also of the children who are attending other schools on Castle Road. As parents we have responsibility to all children.

Please also be careful to be mannerly and careful with our neighbours, particularly if you are parking in their estate.  We would like our relationships with our neighbours to be as cordial as possible.

Mind your bikes

Please also note that children’s bikes must be locked when they are parked in the school. We cannot guarantee their safety and they are parked there at your own risk.  We do not want any situation where a bike is stolen from our grounds.

PTA

The PTA held their AGM in the hall recently and it was very well attended. The following people were elected to the committee: Chairperson: Farzana Shah, Vice Chair: Sabaa Katib-Khan  Treasurer Fatima and Secretary is Ciaran Brosnan . Welcome to you all and thank you for agreeing to put yourselves forward for this committee. A great big thank you also to Aoife, our outgoing Chairperson and Maureen, Marta and Honor , the outgoing committee.

Information to office:   Please update the office with any changes to address or phone numbers. It is vitally important that we have up to date information.
