As you are all aware by now our teacher in third class Red, Paul Kilgarriff, R.I.P. died in a tragic accident while he was abroad on holidays last week. All of the school staff and some of the parents and pupils in third class (Red) and other classes attended his funeral service in Ballygar, Co Galway on Monday and we all extended our sympathies to his family and friends on behalf of the school community. Sinead Harrington (Chairperson of the PTA) represented the parents officially at the funeral and Peggy Masterson (Chairperson of the Board of Management) represented the Board of Management and the Patron, Educate Together.
We had a short assembly here in the school on Tuesday morning to express our grief at what has happened in our school. Children from 3rd to 6th attended this assembly and participated in a minutes’ silence where they were encouraged to say a prayer if they wished or to reflect about our sad loss. Tom and I also visited all the classes from 1st class to 6th class to listen to what the children wanted to say about Paul and to answer any questions that they may have had. We have spoken to your children about the accident and how sad that we all are as a school community to lose Paul. We have asked the children to talk to you, their parents, about how they are feeling and particularly about how you deal with a sudden death in your community or your religion. Children need a lot of reassurance at sad times like this.
I have asked Emma and Rebekah (two of our language support teachers) to take over Paul’s class for the rest of this week. From Monday, Seona Maguire, another Language Support Teacher in the school will take over Paul’s class for the remainder of the school year. I am very grateful to Seona for agreeing to take on this task in such difficult circumstances. I am very pleased to have such a competent teacher who is known to the children who is in a position to take over the class.
As a mark of respect to Paul’s memory we will not now be holding our Esker Loves Books ceremony on Friday next as previously arranged. I also understand that PTA are postponing their PTA meeting due to take place this Friday.
Thank you to the parents who came to the funeral with their children, those who came to the school on Monday to convey their condolences and those who have already signed the book of condolences,
Your kindness is very much appreciated,
